What to see around Göreme

Start with Göreme Open-Air Museum if rock-cut churches and painted interiors are a priority. Treat the museum as a separate visit from walking around the town. For valley time, choose a trail suited to the day’s conditions and ask locally about its start and finish before setting out.

A first-day plan

Settle into your hotel, find the central dolmuş stop and decide on one main outing. Keep a museum visit and an extended walk as separate choices if your arrival leaves limited time. Allow an unhurried meal in town rather than trying to include every nearby sight on the first day.

Getting there and moving on

Dolmuş stops for the Göreme–Çavuşin–Avanos connection are in the centres. The Avanos-bound service arriving from Ürgüp continues through Çavuşin, Paşabağ and Zelve Open-Air Museum to Avanos.

For Uçhisar, departures from Göreme run every 30 minutes between 07:30 and 18:00. For Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu, begin at Göreme terminal, travel to Nevşehir centre and change there. There is no direct dolmuş from Göreme to Ihlara Valley.
